Loosely based on Aesop's fable, "The Tortoise and the Hare," Aesop's Diner is the funny and poignant story of two old friends, Bugs and Shelly, former members of The Family Johnson, once hyped as "The Coolest Band in NYC" and destined for national success. But that destiny was derailed when the band broke up, due mainly to lead singer Bugs' excesses, addictions and all-around bad behavior, which landed him in jail and a couple of stints in rehab.
It is now a year and a half later, and Bugs, as part of his 12-step program, has asked Shelly to meet him for lunch at a diner to apologize for his past actions. However, a lot has changed. Though not as naturally talented as Bugs, Shelly nevertheless has been slowly and steadily working on a solo career and has landed a record deal with a major label. Yet, despite his newfound success, Shelly is reluctant to forgive his down-and-out old friend. And although Bugs seeks redemption, he still clings to memories of his better days as the star of The Family Johnson.
This brief meeting of the two former friends, along with glimpses into their past, reveal the humor and heartbreak of what one man has lost due to his carelessness and what the other has gained from a slower, steadier approach. Aesop's Diner is a heartbreakingly funny fable set to a stunningly beautiful and upbeat original soundtrack.
